DIGESTION AND THE BRAIN

Peace Worldwide Starts Inside

Peace Worldwide Starts Inside

The brain and the digestion work together. Scientuists have known for a long time that the brain stimulates the digestive organs through para -sympathetic activities, such as sight, smell and taste – which in turn stimulate hunger. Psycological factors also impact hunger and digestion, influencing the movements of the intestines, secretion of digestive enzymes and other digestive functions. Intense emotions ( like sadness or anger) will set off a train reaction that can either stimulate or reduce hunger, causing either weight gain or loss and lead to digestive dis – ease.

On the other hand the digestive system influences the brain. For example , irritable bowel syndrome ( IBS) , ulcerative colitis and other gut “unwellness” can affect emotions, behaviours and normal daily functioning. This is a two way axis called the GUT- BRAIN AXIS.

Because of the connection to autonomic nervous system, the digestive organs can be a common cause of psychosomatic illnesses. Many IBSsuffres  can become more extreme under stress leading to psychiatric disorder. Those who suffer panic attacks for example often report bowel disorders, with intestinal triggers starting off a chain of events. Other illnesses , such as auto- immunity and even Cancer can have a pshyco – somatic(mind/body)  link..
